    Shelby Scholars Application for the Shelby Institute for Policy and Leadership


    Thank you for your interest in the Shelby Institute for Policy and Leadership’s Shelby Scholars program.

    The mission of the Shelby Institute is to identify and prepare the next generation of great leaders through the understanding of public policy and the exploration of the fundamentals of leadership in modern society. The Shelby Scholars program is a credit-bearing leadership program for undergraduate students from any academic field who are passionate about public service.
     

    Undergraduate students who meet the following requirements are eligible to apply for the inaugural Shelby Scholars class:

    1. Students must have completed at least 60 credit hours prior to June 1, 2024.
    2. Students must be working toward a minor in Public Policy OR intend to minor in Public Policy OR be pursuing a course of study relevant to the mission of the Institute*.
    3. Shelby Scholars will be required to register for 3 hours of PSC 321-008 during Fall 2024**.


    *Applicants pursuing a course of study relevant to the mission of the Institute will be asked to justify ways in which their course of study relates to the mission.
    **PSC 321-008 is expected to meet on Mondays and Thursdays from 4 - 6 pm beginning on Monday, September 23. Meeting dates are subject to change at the discretion of the guest lecturers to accommodate the lecturer's schedule.

    The goal of the Shelby Institute for Policy and Leadership is to cultivate the next generation of leaders for both the state and the nation.

    To permit us to better learn about you and your aspirations, please craft an essay detailing your background and interest in policy, leadership, and public service, drawing from personal experiences or from observing qualities of leadership in others. Outline your career objectives and how public policy aligns with your goals. Also, please describe how you envision the Shelby Institute might contribute to your growth, including specific subjects, disciplines, or issues you would hope to explore further through participation in the Institute.
